NEW KID IN (CHINA)TOWN

Long overlooked, downtown Sydney is home to the exotic, ever-so-tasty food, cheap clothes and curiousities galore. The perfect setting for someone who is new in town. Chinatown, can’t get you off my mind…

Our downtown hero is a wanderer. He’s a modern Wizard of Oz story…not meant to be here but he is. He can’t quite grasp Sydney winter, nor can we. Smells, colours and sights are so unfamiliar to him that they almost feel like home. In this strange paradoxical comfort Chinatown has it’s final effect. Wanderer’s wonder.

Melbourne Design Awards

CALVO wins Fashion Award

This week signalled the close of the 2010 Melbourne Design Awards voting. Setup to recognise the broad range of design categories open to design professionals, students and those that commission design.

170 of Melbourne’s design commissioners, creators and followers gathered in a relaxed atmosphere to witness the reveal of the 2010 Melbourne Design Award recipients, as voted for by Melbourne and Australia’s own Design Community. Awards winners were presented with two award trophies, recognising the important contribution of not only the designers/creators but also the project commissioners.

After a non-stop week having show cased his latest collection ‘Male’ at OC Communications & Events Catwalk Circus; the votes had been counted and the awards ceremony was held on Wednesday night.

Among a collection of Melbourne’s elite Designers from all design disciplines, Oscar Calvo was awarded the top prize in the fashion category. Having both commissioned and designed the collection Oscar Calvo was awarded the double accolade for his 2010 male collection.

Catwalk Circus

No Clowning Around

Oscar Calvo had heads turning during Catwalk Circus when he presented his Ready-to-Wear Fall/Winter 2011 Collection in the midst of L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) 2011.

Calvo’s talent has extended to writing, directing and producing fashion shows with his exciting new Fashion PR and Events Company, aptly titled, OC Communications & Events. His latest innovation, Catwalk Circus was a Charity fundraiser for The Aids trust of Australia, exhibiting Collections from the hottest Australian and New Zealand labels, eccentric dance performances and outrageous jaw dropping acrobatics from over 90 performers to create an entertainment extravaganza!

Calvo’s Collection was the only menswear fashion label to showcase on the night of Catwalk Circus and certainly injected the show with its unique brand of avant-garde, sexy and upscale menswear. The looks were a tribute to the 80’s New Wave California beach culture and the emerging New York Hip Hop scene, cleverly mixing materials like mesh and snakeskin with touches of neon colours with a unique spin, tempering the looks with black, white and gunmetal. The use of unique accents like rope, eyelets and zipper trims completed the Collection and certainly gave the collection an edgy sense of modernity.

Highlighting the collection were tailored pieces with detailed pockets and large covered buttons, fitted shirts with small collars. Also on display hoodies, trench coats, updated board shorts and the label’s signature decadent knitwear.

With this trendsetting Collection, OC OSCARCALVO will certainly cement its reputation as the contemporary luxury label of choice for the style-savvy urban man.
