The OC. Oscar Calvo gives us a dose of chic Melbourne style with his latest winter knitwear.
Many of our international readers might think Australia is a land of endless sun and warmth, but, surprisingly, there are small pockets of the country that experience winter, a season not unlike British summer. Thankfully, we have talented designers creating sleek and stylish knitwear to keep us warm during this unbearably mild season. One of our most accomplished is Oscar Calvo.
This year, Calvo has brought together a versatile and chic knitwear range. The collection features stylish fine-knit basics with meticulous attention to detail and quality fabrics like merino wool and 100 per cent cotton blends, which guarantee a soft, comfortable feel.
Calvo’s key looks this season include nautical inspired cotton polo knits with traditional black-and-white stripes and silver anchor button detail, a close-fitted long-sleeve V-neck knit and a stylish press-stud cardigan.
The pieces are adaptable, refining any outfit from business wear to everyday clothing. They’re also really soft and fine, so even the most sensitive skin can wear it without worry.
To showcase the opulence of the collection, Calvo shot his latest campaign at Melbourne’s lavish Moser Room cocktail lounge using classic Ristefskymacheda underwear. So not to over heat during this insufferably temperate season we too recommend wearing Oscar Calvo’s knitwear with underwear only.

Melbourne-based designer Oscar Calvo founded his self-named label in 2004. Now with four collections behind him and many more to come, he is one of Australia’s most successful rising fashion stars.
Calvo’s style ranges from striking and daring, like the tiger-stripe shorts that have featured in previous issues of DNA, to simple, elegantly-cut shirts, pants and suits. One thing Calvo ain’t afraid of is colour. Or patterns. He imports high-quality fabrics from Europe and uses contrast to make his pieces really project. It’s the sort of clothing you wear when you want to stand out in a room but don’t want to scream, “Look at me!” It’s bold and unique but also chic and well made.
Last year marked the opening of the first Oscar Calvo boutique in Melbourne. The flagship store offers a range of clothing from high-end street wear to customised suiting with vintage lining. There’s also a range of stylish footwear and accessories to finish off the perfect outfit.
Calvo has kept his label away from the ubiquitous jeans and t-shirt model, inviting men to explore something a little more sophisticated but still easy to wear.
For those of you not able to get to Melbourne, a new website is in the making where you’ll be able to shop online and get a whole range of exclusive Oscar Calvo gear.
